The world’s leading safe surfing tool Web of Trust (WOT) has won the lawsuit filed against it in the United States. WOT was accused of defamation, violating rights, conspiracy and manipulating algorithms. The court of justice in Florida granted the motion to dismiss with prejudice.

Another victory for the Freedom of Speech!

On October 19th, visitors to computerforumz.com were greeted with a message stating that the Web site’s domain name registration has expired.

The situation has now been corrected and the forum is back online.

I removed the Windows 8 hard drive and rebooted. Still no BIOS access. My system displayed the customary error message. I rebooted again. Access to the BIOS has now been restored.

Microsoft has intentionally embedded code into Windows 8 to block users from installing or booting a Linux or other operating system disk.

This is not FUD.  This is fact.

I’m done with Windows 8.

The fan blades are fine. The fan motor is excellent. The heatsink is more than adequate. The four plastic clips that hold the fan to the motherboard are cheap pieces of crap!

The CPU is the heart of the computer. If the fan/heatsink comes loose from the motherboard, the system fails and the chip dies. A $300.00 (US) CPU.  All because of  a rinky-dink push-pin that doesn’t  screw into anything.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the fan were mounted horizontally in the computer. But most modern cases mount it vertically, as if it were nailed to a wall. The combination of vibration and weight pulling on those horrid little plastic clips makes this an accident waiting to happen.

I’ve been reading posts on other forums where people have been having issues either installing these fans or upgrading, and the consensus is that you have to remove the motherboard and then install the new unit to make sure that the fan is properly connected on the backside. That’s ridiculous!

If this was a car or a baby’s crib or child safety seat, it would have been recalled. I won’t put up with an inferior OS, so why should I tolerate inferior hardware?

One loose connector might not make a significant difference. But if two consecutive connectors fail, the heatsink will lose enough contact with the CPU to cause the chip to overheat.  The end user will never even be aware of this until their computer stops working.

There needs to be a mechanism that applies constant tension between the fan/heatsink and the motherboard. These plastic clips are not exerting a constant spring-loaded tension, making the connection much weaker than it ought to be.

Another problem with using plastic lies in the fact that plastic becomes softer as it heats up. This can also weaken the bond as gravity pulls on the fan/heatsink. Someone didn’t think this through at all. They just looked at the cost and ease of manufacturing.

There is no excuse for bad design. And this isn’t just bad design, this is class-action-lawsuit bad design.

It’s a very simple front-end for creating an ISO image from a video DVD.

Under “Preferences” users have the option of either using the original dual-layer DVD disk format (which preserves the full video quality) or the smaller single-layer DVD format (which “shrinks” the video down to fit the disk size, but also reduces the video quality to about VHS quality). Hence the name.

It also gives you the option of copying the entire disk (menus and movie/feature) or just movie only.

Don’t be fooled by its small size. This is one handy little ripper.

Most Linux users can find this program in their repositories under the name Shrinkta.

Move your virtual hard drive:

When you create a guest operating system in VB, the program stores that OS as single large file with the extension .vdi. This file is stored in a hidden folder in your Linux Home directory.

Open your Home folder and select “Show Hidden Files” under the View menu. Open the folder called .VirtualBox. Locate your .vdi file.

Open a new instance of your Home folder. Create a new folder and call it VMware or something that you will remember. Open the new folder and drag and drop your .vdi file to the new folder. Close all the folders.

Now if you try to use VirtualBox to run your guest OS you will receive an error message. Don’t worry about that. Everything is fine.

The fix:

The simplest solution is to uninstall your existing installation of VirtualBox. Then go back into your Home folder and make sure that the hidden .VirtualBox folder has also been deleted. This is a key step to rebuilding VB.

Download and install the latest version of VirtualBox from their Website. Do not install VB from your repositories.

Once installed, launch VB. Now create a new guest operating system by clicking the “New” button.

Give it a name and set the OS type. Click “Next.”

Set the amount of RAM you wish to give to the guest OS. This amount should be just slightly less than half of the total amount of RAM of your computer (depending upon your system). Most guest operating systems require ideally 512 MB of RAM, but more is better if you can spare it. Remember, you need enough RAM for your host OS as well as the guest OS. Click “Next.”

Here’s where our earlier preparation will pay off. Select “Use existing hard disk.” Navigate to the .vdi file that you just moved to the new folder. Click “Next” and finish the creation process.

That’s it. You’re done. VirtualBox is up-to-date and your guest OS is ready to launch!

You must be running either Chrome or Firefox with Adblock Plus.

Add the following filter rule to Adblock Plus under “Preferences” in Firefox:

In Chrome, select “Options” in Adblock Plus and click on the “Blacklist” tab. Click the “Edit” button, add the line of code and then click “Save.”

Close and restart Chrome or Firefox.

The instant preview should now be disabled.
